Most of the time when we hear the term ‘vision’ it is used alongside dreams. They are put together because they are two of the most common of the encounters we can have, and will increase as the Spirit of God is poured out over the Earth. When we take a closer look at visions, we will see that they are very different than dreams even though they do have some crossover. The basic view of dreams is a scene of pictures that one has when asleep, while visions often happen when one is awake. I will touch on dreams later and want to focus on visions for now.
God will grant visions to make Himself known and to open our eyes to how big He is.
Visions can be very overwhelming and can also be given at night time, which is a night vision. They can start and stop at any given time because visions use your spiritual eyes and by-pass your mind, which is the opposite of a dream, and can be true if you are prophesying over someone and are seeing pictures for this person. The images may not make any sense to you whatsoever, but once you begin to explain what you are seeing the person receiving is affected and blessed because it is from God and not from the natural mind. You may also have visions within a dream which makes some of the details and objects more literal than symbolic.
If one is called to walk in the prophetic realm or called to be a prophet, then God will give that person a season of visions to awaken the seer anointing within them. The seer realm is the ability to see in the Spirit to determine what is happening around us. I will talk more about the topic ‘seer realm’ in other blogs.
God grants us a vision to move us into a greater understanding of His Kingdom so we can start seeing things the way He sees them instead of the way we see things on Earth. It will expand the way we know God and shine light into many areas that had been unknown to us up to that point.
One way to tell if you are having visions of God is that it will affect your body. Your body will react to that level of the Spirit. You could feel tired or even sick for a day or so afterwards. It can take some time before you begin to see clearly in the natural realm or you may lose a bit of what we call common sense. If you take the time to search out the scriptures you will find that many had very different physical effects after having powerful visions: Paul went blind, Jacob gained a permanent limp, Daniel was sick for a day or so afterwards, etc. Do not worry this will not typically be the case if you are prophesying and taking a glimpse into the Spirit for someone else. I am talking about being alone with God and being brought into a vision that could be a few minutes long or last hours. Next time you are spending time with God start to ask Him to grant you visions so that you can begin or continue to grow in the more profound revelation of who God is.
